Language Diversity: Evidence For Language Fitness
نویسنده
چکیده
In the last few years the study of language evolution has received extensive attention. Many Studies have explored the dynamics and the conditions in which a structured coherent language can emerge (e.g. Nowak 2000). These efforts have been mainly guided by the notion of natural selection, which assumes that language contributes to human fitness, and that successful communication leads to an increase in individual survival probability. Although this assumption is quite intuitive, evidence for its presence is less obvious. In this work we will present some new observations, which are based on empirical data and simulations that address this issue by studying the evolutionary dynamics of language diversity.

Attitudes towards English Language Norms in the Expanding Circle: Development and Validation of a new Model and Questionnaire
This paper describes the development and validation of a new model and questionnaire to measure Iranian English as a foreign language learners’ attitudes towards the use of native versus non-native English language norms. Based on a comprehensive review of the related literature and interviews with domain experts, five factors were identified. A draft version of a questionnaire based on those f...
متن کاملDevelopment and Psychometric Evaluation of Speech and Language Pathology Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (SLP-EBPQ)
Background: To date, there is no specific instrument to measure evidence-based practice (EBP) in Speech and Language Pathology (SLP). Therefore, it is essential to design a valid and reliable instrument in the EBP field for SLP. Aim: To develop a speech and language pathology evidence-based practice questionnaire (SLP-EBPQ) for the Iranian context and evaluate its psychometric properties. Metho...
متن کاملBounded fitness landscapes and the evolution of the linguistic diversity
A simple spatial computer simulation model was recently introduced to study the evolution of the linguistic diversity [1]. The model considers processes of selective geographic colonization, linguistic anomalous diffusion and mutation. In the approach, we ascribe to each language a fitness function which depends on the number of people that speak that language. Here we extend the aforementioned...
متن کاملPredictors of Language Service Availability in U.S. Hospitals
Background Hispanics comprise 17% of the total U.S. population, surpassing African-Americans as the largest minority group. Linguistically, almost 60 million people speak a language other than English. This language diversity can create barriers and additional burden and risk when seeking health services. Patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) for example, have been shown to experience...
متن کاملLanguage, Emotion and Metapragmatics: A Theory Based on Typological Evidence
Humans are equipped with some universal or language-specific abilities to recognize emotions. However, because of the different emotional contents in diverse languages and the relevant cultural differences, humans with different cultural backgrounds own different metapragmatical abilities to recognize and express emotions. A hypothesis concerning emotional effects about intonation and particle ...
